Wishing You a Happy New Year, and a Big Thank You . . .

Happy New Year to you all! I wanted to thank everyone for their support this year and for following me as I continue to grow as an artist. It truly does lift my spirits when I get feedback on a piece of artwork. I had a great year with many shows and hangs. Additionally, I had the release of the Missouri Arts Council Poster and on top of that . . . the truly humbling reception at the Capital Rotunda in February, so I would say it was a good year. If you are not familiar with the Missouri Arts Council, you should be. They are doing fabulous work in our state promoting the arts! Tirelessly. A big thank you to them for selecting my work and giving me tremendous support. Furthermore, a special thank you goes to Keiko who made the process run so smoothly!

Hope all is well for you. Life is busy for me now (four grand kids under 3,) but I am ready to get back into the studio soon. I completed a commission for Christmas which was great fun, but extremely challenging. Painting for someone always takes much more energy than painting for yourself. You must work toward someone else's vision and color palette, but it also pushes an artist to be more aware. So a thank you goes out to my client. Wink wink. Also, I would like to thank everyone who has purchased art or shown my work this year. Without you and your support, my work would be insignificant to say the least.

Here is the piece I completed late November toward my new direction that I have been contemplating. I have incorporated vintage fabric (which I do normally), but took the direction toward a more playful look. Much of my work is horizontally oriented, but this I chose to orient vertically instead.

Denver woman arrested for punching, damaging $30 million Clyfford Still painting

A 36-year-old Denver woman, apparently drunk, leaned against an iconic Clyfford Still painting worth more than $30 million last week, punched it, slid down it and urinated on herself, according to a criminal case against Carmen Lucette Tisch.

"It doesn't appear she urinated on the painting or that the urine damaged it, so she's not being charged with that," said Lynn Kimbrough, a spokeswoman for the Denver District Attorney's Office, said Wednesday.

"You have to wonder where her friends were."

Tisch is being charged with criminal mischief in the incident that happened at the Clyfford Still Museum at 3:30 p.m. on Dec. 29.

Damage to the painting — "1957-J-No. 2." — is estimated at $10,000.

The painting, which is nearly 9 1/2 feet tall and 13 feet wide, is estimated between $30 million and $40 million by the museum.

Tisch allegedly committed the offense with her pants pulled down, according to the police report, and struck the painting repeatedly with her fist.

The officer stated that scratches and other damage to the painting were visible.

A museum spokeswoman declined to describe the damage to painting or answer questions about who would pay the cost for repairs, deferring to the police investigation and museum policy.

The museum released a statement:

"On December 29, 2011, an incident of criminal mischief took place at the Clyfford Still Museum. The police were summoned and the offender was arrested and is currently in police custody. Museum officials are cooperating with the authorities regarding the situation and are in the process of further assessing the incident."

Ivar Zeile, owner of Plus Gallery in Denver, said that if the painting's canvas wasn't pierced, it likely can be restored.

Whether the damage affects the painting's value, however, depends on several factors, including whether it remains a museum piece or goes on the market. Sometimes such damage becomes part of piece's history, he said.

"It does damage the piece, though, even people just knowing that happened," he said.

The Clyfford Still Museum opened on Nov. 18 to exhibit the influential North Dakota-born artist's 60-year body of work.

Still, celebrated as one of the top abstract-expressionists of the 20th century, died at 1980. The city and county of Denver acquired the collection after a long lobbying effort by former mayor John Hickenlooper with the help of Still's nephew, Curt Freed, a Denver doctor.

To fund the musuem's endowment, four of Still's paintings were sold at Sotheby's auction house in New York for more than $114 million.

Freed could not be reached for comment Wednesday.

Still's widow, Patricia, agreed in 2004 to give the city hundreds of her husband's works on the condition that Denver build a museum to house them. She died a year later, and her estate were added as well.

The museum's collection includes about 2,400 paintings, drawings, prints, and sculptures, much of which have never been on public display before.

Tisch was still being held in the Denver County Jail Wednesday on $20,000 bond. She is scheduled to appear in Denver County Court Friday morning.

Court records show that Tisch was arrested a year ago on an armed robbery charge in Glendale. She was freed on $50,000 bond, then the charge was dropped on Dec. 16.

She pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol in Lakewood in 2008 and received fines, 48 hours of a community service, a 30-day suspended jail sentence and 18 months probation, records show.

Why I paint abstractly . . .

Some good friends went on a trip to the Grand Canyon last week on vacation and they had us over for dinner last night. It was a wonderful evening. The friend was talking about the light and color on the canyon and how it changes minute to minute. She was amazed how beautiful it was. Graciously she bought a book for me of different artists who paint the Grand Canyon; some really incredible work by the way!

But it dawned on me, (no pun intended Dawn) as I was planting flower bulbs today that I paint abstractly because I do not feel I can recreate anything more beautiful than nature itself! It is as simple as that. Nature does it best. I cannot compete with nature, so I do not try. What I do do is recreate the mood or feel of nature. I cannot improve upon it. Ever.

Art Collecting:

The Kansas City Star Sunday paper stated on August 21, 2011, that "Original art, in addition to family photographs and heirlooms, makes a home personal and individual. " They quote Courtney Novogratz of HGTV as saying that "Original art reflects who you are as a person, as a family, much more that buying something from a chain store."

Of course, I tend to agree. My art makes my home original and uniquely mine. And art makes my home feel like I want it to feel when I have had a long day. It has that "ahhh" feeling.

Of course, choosing art is strictly a personal choice. You should love what you hang in your home. It is a lifelong investment. When you pay $1000-2000 for a couch, you know at some point you will need to replace that couch. It will not last forever; however, a piece of art will last forever, and more than likely appreciate in value! It also will be come a family heirloom to the next generations.

Hope you enjoy this article on art collecting. Artists and galleries are always willing to work with you. It is important for you to be happy with your choice because happy clients usually return. It is just good business.

Don’t be intimidated: Galleries are happy to see you, and their works can be affordable.

Original art, in addition to family photographs and heirlooms, makes a home personal and individual.

But making the leap into collecting art can be intimidating, even to the bright and the bold. Perhaps that fear factor forms early, after you’ve visited art museums and spotted security guards standing on alert. Or maybe it comes from the notion that you have to be an art insider to even step inside a gallery. And, of course, there’s the price tag issue.

“You don’t have to have a lot of money to buy art,” says Cortney Novogratz, who along with her decorator husband, Robert, has an HGTV show, “Home by Novogratz.” Original art is a major part of their design projects, and they typically spotlight an artist in each episode.

“Original art reflects who you are as a person, as a family, much more than buying something from a chain store,” she says.

For those who haven’t purchased art before, Novogratz advises going to art fairs to get an overview of what’s out there. She has attended Art Basel Miami Beach, where more than 2,000 international artists exhibit their work.

“You discover what your tastes are,” she says. “You quickly learn there’s more out there than paintings, which is what people think of as art. There’s photography, ceramics, charcoal and pencil drawings, glass and furniture. Some designer chairs we purchased have really held their value.”

The next step is visiting galleries, intimidating at first for the uninitiated art seeker.

“They have the power, not the gallery owner,” says John O’Brien, owner of Dolphin, a gallery and custom framer in the West Bottoms. “I always tell people to take their time. Get a feel for what you like and don’t like.”

Galleries are Novogratz’s preferred method for buying art.

“Yes, online is the world we live in, but I like to see where my money’s going and to meet the artist,” she says. “It makes art a richer experience.”

For 32-year-old Erica Wren of Leawood, though, the Web is a great research tool. A gallery site led last year to her first major art purchase.

“I was hopping around websites, as usual, being a design junkie,” says Wren, vice president of communications at Barkley, a Kansas City-based advertising and marketing agency. “I came across pieces by artist Eric Zener, and I was struck by them.”

So Wren made an appointment with Blue Gallery in the Crossroads Arts District to see some of the California artist’s works. Gallery owner Kelly Kuhn let Wren take home several on approval, a common try-before-you-buy practice among gallery owners and customers. Wren loved the piece “Bursting Through,” a photograph of a woman submerged in water that was painted with silver leaf on a light box. She discussed it with her family before buying.

“Usually I’m a muller-over when it comes to purchases for the home,” she says. “But the piece and its title resonated with me. Art shows a commitment to something unique. I think it’s important to support the arts, which is more under-funded than ever with the cuts nation wide.”

Wren now has a book of Zener’s art that he inscribed to her. She hopes to meet him one day.

Novogratz asks artists questions beyond what inspired their work. She’ll ask how many prints were made of a photograph. She also discusses decorative elements with the artist, such as framing: Lucite box or chipped wooden molding?

Artist Lonnie Powell of Lee’s Summit enjoys meeting patrons and discussing his work, much of which is portraiture of African-American men and women in oil, acrylic, charcoal, pencil, pastel and watercolors. Like most artists, he prefers people purchase what he has created from his own mind’s eye and hands. But for a 60 percent retainer, he accepts commissions for custom work, a common practice.

Still, Novogratz has found it works best when couples act as a unified front on purchasing art.

“It shouldn’t be stressful,” she says. “It should be fun. Remind each other we found each other, so we can definitely decide on pieces of art together.”

Art Scams Are There: Beware!

Friday, I had an email that I was suspect of the content. Today I am sure! Someone is trying to scam me. This is my second scammer email in the past year and a half that I have had. Luckily, I have been on my toes. Thought it might benefit other artists' to publish this info that I found on ARTBISTRO posted by AngelaArt and my emails from balletryan@gmail.com

Please republish if you are in the art community.

Key Signs of a Scammer:

1. Misspelled words and bad grammar. Written in poor English.

2. Want to send cashier's check or money order through another person/company.

3. URGENT reply needed. Item needed immediately.

4. They want you to use their shipping company and pay for them out of pocket. (So in other words not only are they sending you a fake check, you are paying THEM for the privilege of stealing your art!)

5. They are not informed about your art and ask for information that is readily available on your website. Or ask for information about a painting when you are a sculptor.

6. Offer sounds too good to be true, they want to purchase many items at once.

7. They request personal information about you to make special arrangements for payment or pick up.

8. The email address is from yahoo or hotmail or some other major webmail account.

9. Trust your intuition. If it seems fishy it probably is, so go slowly.

Tips on protecting yourself:

1. Stick to your normal payment process (insist on using PayPal or other trusted system). Most scams revolve around the payment.

2. Be SURE all payments clear your bank BEFORE doing anything. This can take weeks for overseas accounts so be wary of customers who want to rush the process.

3. Search the internet for information about the buyer & his email account. A lot of times you will find other artists who have reported them as scammers.

New Works in the Synthesis Series: What is a painting worth?

Here are a few pics from a new work I completed this morning. Of course, the pics loaded backwards, so work your way up from the bottom for sequence.

Painting is a tedious process, but a "loved task" for this gal. Sometimes the process is easy and sometimes it is like mating elephants! Friends always ask, how long it takes to complete a painting, and there is no definitive answer to that question. It is like asking a doctor how long it took to diagnose a disease. You must consider the education, the training and the life experiences it took to get to that point. Not to mention the critical thinking skills! And not everyone can be a good doctor, and not everyone can be a good artist. It takes time, experience, critical thinking skills, and continued education. I am still learning and growing, but feel I am on my way.

Back to the question: how long does it take physically to complete a painting aside from the education, etc? Well, I am working on a week with this piece and still I am not done. I must stretch, seal and sign, title, catalogue and photograph. So next question: "What's this painting worth?" Think about what you are paid each week and comment. I struggle with this question. Looking forward to what you have to say :)

As much as I wanted to do everything myself, I actually hired someone to shoot my artwork at UCM last week. In the past I have done this myself, but not always successfully. Shooting art work is difficult because of glare, distortion, and other factors which include insufficient lighting (and an old camera.)

The young man I hired, Bryan, did a great job, and now I have high res images I can use for my website, blog and juried entries. Over the next few weeks, I will be highlighting and updating my sites.

Here is one of his images:

This piece is mounted tapestry style; it hangs out away from the wall and was especially difficult to shoot because the heavy canvas has a tendency to curl at the bottom. Bryan devised a method to alleviate this issue. Another interesting tidbit, this canvas was Mr. Ellis, the former UCM art chair for many many years and is my homage to his legacy. I have several pieces that are in this series, "Ellis Homage."

Jack's Artwork and Japanese Woodblock Prints

Jack's work that was selected for exhibition at the Trammell Crow

Here it is. We finally have an image of Jack's artwork that hung at the Crow recently. Incredible detail and intricacy for a 4th grader: I am impressed! Great asymmetrical composition too, (read more about Japanese art with the links provided below.)

Additionally, I understand that Jack has a dedicated and highly qualified art teacher and we commend her work and efforts as well. Her name is Mrs. Jennifer Riordan. We need to remember to thank our great teachers. So thanks Mrs. Riordan!

In today's environment, art is sometimes dismissed or underfunded, but research shows time and again, that children/students who are involved in the arts make better grades, stay in school, and have better critical thinking and problem solving skills. "Art makes you smart" is my motto. And Jack proves that point.

Kudos to Jack, Mrs. Riordan and their school for the outstanding art program.

Young Artist Named Jack:Wow!

I wanted to share some fabulous news from a wonderful artist in the 4th grade. His name is Jack and his artwork (ink and watercolor) was displayed at the Trammell and Margaret Crow Collection of Asian Art in Dallas, TX. Wow! What an accomplishment for such a young artist!

His work was one of twelve selected and displayed April 27-May 6, 2011 at the Crow Collection. Unfortunately, I was not able to view this particular piece, but I understand that this young man is quite talented. So keep an eye on him. Here is his congratulatory letter and a few pieces of his artwork from other times. I hope to get an image of his ink and watercolor to post later.

Gallery of Art and Design Hosts Summer Exhibition I

WARRENSBURG, MO (May 10, 2011) – The University of Central Missouri’s Gallery of Art and Design will the host the first exhibition of the season as Summer Exhibition I opens Thursday, May 19 and runs through June 17.

Exhibits will feature the annual exhibit of works by the Mid-Missouri Artists and area artists Teresa Dirks and Janice Hargrave. An opening reception is planned for 4-6 p.m. Thursday, May 19, in the Main Gallery as part of Warrensburg Main Street’s monthly “3rdsdays in the ‘Burg” celebration, with a special performance by the New Century Dulcimer Ensemble.

In the Main Gallery, works on display by members of Mid-Missouri Artists will feature paintings, drawings, sculpture, ceramics, photography and mixed media. Founded in 1970, Mid-Missouri Artists encourages area artists in their creative endeavors, fostering, promoting and advancing the existing cultural and educational organizations in Mid-Missouri. MMA serves artists in Johnson, Lafayette, Henry and Pettis counties.

On exhibit in the Outer Gallery, works by Warrensburg artist Teresa Dirks transfer energy and explore color through the use of graphics, fibers and acrylic. Dirks’ mixed media on canvas work, “Tide of Fate,” was included in the prestigious Missouri 50 exhibit at the 2010 Missouri State Fair, and it was selected to be the image for the 2011 Missouri Arts Award invitation, poster and program.

Works by area artist Janice Hargrave will be on display in Gallery 115. Hargrave has gained acclaim for her work in ceramics, colored pencil drawing and acrylic painting, in addition to sculpture. He art has been exhibited nationally and internationally at juried shows, and she is well-known for her presence at local, state and regional exhibitions in Missouri. Her work reflects her values – family, faith, memories and the beauty of everyday objects. She is a spring 2011 graduate of UCM with a degree in art education and ceramics.

DUBLIN.- An exhibition by Ferran Garcia Sevilla, a leading Spanish artist whose career has embraced many of the most influential art movements of the past 40 years, opened to thepublic at the Irish Museum of Modern Art on 10 June 2010. Ferran Garcia Sevilla presents 42 paintings in the artist’s characteristically eclectic style, which draws on influences as diverse as his travels in the Middle East, philosophy, Eastern cultures, comic books and urban graffiti. The exhibition comprises works from 1981 to date and includes well-known earlier works, alongside a group of more recent, previously unseen pieces, all illustrating the extraordinary visual richness of Garcia Sevilla’s work.
The earlier works in the exhibition date from the 1980s, when Garcia Sevilla was one of the principal proponents of the so-called return to painting. This followed a period as an outstanding figure in the vibrant Catalan Conceptual Art scene centred on Barcelona, where he had settled from Palma de Majorca in 1969. Paintings such as Ruc series, created after a trip to Nepal in 1986, brought Garcia Sevilla great international acclaim, as part of an explosion of Spanish art on the international scene, which also included artists such as Juan Mũnoz, Cristina Iglesias, José Maria Sicilia and Miquel Barceló. During the 1980s he showed regularly throughout Europe and beyond, with solo show in Spain, France, the UK and Japan. He participated in the Venice Biennale in 1986, in Documenta 8 in Kassel in 1987 and in ROSC 1988, which took place in number of locations around Dublin, including the Royal Hospital Kilmainham now the Irish Museum of Modern Art. Works from this period such as the celebrated Deus series from 1981 demonstrate the artist’s interest in exotic cultures and mythologies, while their execution, with rapid brush strokes and splashes and drips, suggest the immediacy of primitive rituals. The Ruc paintings show a further development of these mythic or symbolic forms in a more graphic style and include what the artist himself has described as some of his most powerful images. Always controversial, he also began to introduce, sometimes self-mocking, phrases into his paintings, such as “If you discover the secret I’m sure you’ll get depressed” in Muca 17.
Towards the end of the 1980s Garcia Sevilla works take on a more three-dimensional form incorporating everyday objects, including books, shoes and light bulbs. His use of floor tiles in the Mosaico series refers directly to the work of the famous Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí, who used broken ceramics in, for example, his design for Parc Güell. The early 1990s sees the introduction of still further new imagery in the form of coloured discs, hands, feet and arrow motifs in the Sama series from 1990, while the many works that make up the Xa series from 1995 contain primarily black and red forms reminiscent of scaffolding or of the iron grilles used in 19th-century balconies in Barcelona.

Towards the end of the 1990s, in series such as Tepe, Garcia Sevilla’s work becomes more introverted, featuring drips, intertwining and superimposed lines, dots and nets. While these motifs suggest balloons, gun shots, fireworks and comets as well as force-fields, graphs and atmospheric phenomena, they may also simply be results of the properties of paint as a material. In some cases, he exaggerates the dripping effect further by rotating his canvases. These works were the last to be seen for some time and marked a move from the narrative to the lyrical in which specific references are abandoned.

In 1998 Garcia Sevilla stopped exhibiting in solo exhibitions, alienated by what he saw as an overly-commercialised art scene. He continued, however to create work with the same vigour as before and works began to emerge again in a solo show in Barcelona in 2007. In the Moll series from 2008, for example, the dot has become the predominant element, seemingly referring to notions such as the dissolution of reality or the disintegration of matter. Sometimes they are spread over the expanse of the painting; on other occasions, they form constellations and molecular chains.

Born in Palma de Majorca in 1949, Ferran Garcia Sevilla lives and works in Barcelona. Major international exhibitions include Foundation Cartier, Paris, 1997; IVAM, Valencia, 1998; Malmo Konsthall, 1998; Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Renia Sofía, Madrid, 2001; and more recently exhibitions at Galería Joan Prats, Barcelona, 2007, and Galería Fúcares, Madrid, 2008. Been in the studio the past few days. Stretched so much canvas yesterday that I have blisters on the palm of my hand. Hurts so good . . . not really, but good to be painting. Absolutely great!

Not just anyone can make abstract art, and a degree in art is worth something — at least when it comes to judging an artwork. Such are the findings of a study recently released in the journalPsychology Science, which sought to put to bed the old my-child-could-paint-that canard about abstract art.

The study, performed by Boston College's Angelina Hawley-Dolan and Ellen Winner, involved 72 undergraduates, about half of whom — or 32, to be precise — were majoring in studio art. Participants were shown 30 paintings by Abstract Expressionists, which were paired with a painting by either a child, a monkey, a chimpanzee, a gorilla, or an elephant, with the pairs selected based on superficial similarities in terms of color and morphology. Respondents were then asked to guess which was which, but also which they preferred. Ten pairs were unlabeled, ten were incorrectly labeled, and ten were correctly labeled, so that the test would be able to measure to what extent information associated with the work biased taste.

The results? "In all conditions, both art students and psychology students chose the professional works as more preferred and of better quality," reports Psychology Today, summarizing the findings. "And most of the time preferences were pretty immune to labels." Moreover, art students were less swayed by the mislabeling issue, and got the answers right more often.

Interestingly, by far the strongest bias effect was seen among non-art students when a work was correctly labeled. A mere 57.75 percent of these participants chose the correctly labeled painting as their favorite, but at the same time a whopping 79.25 percent correctly identified it as the real deal. In other words, the correct label really helped non-art students determine an artwork was actually art, but by no means did this make them like it any better. By comparison, the number of art students who picked the right work was the same under these conditions as the number who said that work was their favorite — 65.4 percent chose the actual Ab-Ex masterpiece as their "preference," while 65.51 percent correctly identified it as being by an adult human.

In a follow-up, Hawley-Dolan wrote to Psychology Today to point out a further aspect of the study of interest to art theorists: Apparently, when study participants were asked to explain why they picked the works that they chose as their favorites, they made more references to the painter's intentions when they were speaking about works that were actually by professional artists than when they were describing the child or animal artworks — regardless of labeling condition. In other words, somehow, viewers sensed which works were by mature humans.

"This finding shows that we can see the mind behind the art," Hawley-Dolan explained. "We see more than we think we do when we look at abstract art."

Art made of my art: This piece was made by a fellow artist and new friend. She cut smaller images of my piece, "Tide of Fate," and placed them together on a cubical wall in her office. Using pins she created a 3-D effect by varying different angles and positions of the painting image. I love her creativity. Beautiful.

Idea to force Iowa to sell its $150 million Jackson Pollock painting dies

The idea to force the University of Iowa to sell its $150 million Jackson Pollock painting has officially died in the legislature.

The reason: The issue has become so cumbersomely emotional that reaching consensus is unlikely, the legislator pushing for the sale said today.

“Right now the legislature needs to focus on passing a budget for Iowans that meets their priority needs and doesn’t spend more than we take in,” said Rep. Scott Raecker, R-Urbandale who introduced the bill.

Raecker has received numerous e-mails and calls from people with strong opinions on both sides of the issue and some of them have involved profanity and ill wishes towards his next reelection campaign.

Raecker made the proposal in hopes of using the money to create a perpetual fund and pay for hundreds of scholarships for university students. But the idea created a flutter of opposition.

John Pappajohn, a well-known Des Moines Philanthropist who has given about $40 million to the university publicly criticized the idea last week. And, on Monday Morning, Gov. Terry Branstad expressed his opposition to the idea, saying it could have a chilling affect upon private donations.

House Study Bill 84 was scheduled to be considered today at 4 p.m. by the House Appropriations Committee. That meeting has been canceled.

“I do understand their intention is to have more money available for scholarships,” Branstad said. So their intentions are good but the unintended consequences, in terms of donations to the universities, is something that should also be considered.”

The painting, “Mural,” was donated in 1951 by Peggy Guggenheim, who at the time believed it was worth a few thousands dollars.

Pollock is one of the nation’s most influential painters. An Academy-Award winning film about his life that ended in 1956 from a drunken-driving accident was released in 2000 and stared Ed Harris.

My muse and I dropped my art at 2631 Gallery on Saturday. We met Dorothy and Kale and chatted. Great people! and I look forward to seeing the show on Friday. Incredible space! You really need to see it. (Actually the space is For Sale.) Dorothy and Kale are hanging the show for me which is quite different. Usually I hang the show myself with trusty friends along by my side. Cannot wait to see it!

As you know, we are expecting the MEGA snow this week with blizzard like conditions, so by Friday I expect that everyone will be ready for a break. Is there a better way to "get out of that cabin" than by spending your Friday night with us? I think not. So I hope to see you at 2631 Friday between 5:00-9:00!

Here are some new works for my First Friday at 2631 Gallery. Less than two weeks away, and I feel that I still have a lot of work ahead. Prepping for this show, and preparing for the Missouri Arts Council Awards Ceremony is keeping this gal busy; but that is a good thing though.

See how you like the new technique. I am leaving raw canvas and allowing drips to run. It is a controlled drip. Having fun feeling my way through this new process. It is very similar to what I have been doing for several years but as I progress the outcome has a different feel. Tell me what you think . . .

29. Aided a lady in a wheelchair. She was waiting for someone to pick her up and was going to be by herself late at night at the airport. So we stayed with her until her daughter arrived.

30. Picked up a package that an elderly lady dropped. (And yes, I gave it back to her.)

Strange Post but . . .

I know . . . I know . . . this is a strange post, but I have had so many requests lately for this recipe and decided to just post it. Share it.

For me there is a direct correlation between cooking and art: Creativity! Cooking and baking were probably my first creative endeavors. So with that said I hope you enjoy this recipe. It is alsways a hit. And for you grit snobs, grits ands polenta are the same thing :)

Momma T's Christmas Garlic Cheese Grits

4 cups chicken broth

3 cups milk

1 T. salt

¼ tsp. cayenne pepper

¼ tsp. paprika

1 tsp. chopped garlic

1 ¼ cups grits (not instant)

1 ½ cups Colby Jack cheese

5 T. butter

Fresh pepper to taste

3 eggs optional

In a medium saucepan, combine the water or broth, garlic, paprika, milk, salt, and cayenne and bring to a boil. Slowly whisk in the grits and lower the heat to a simmer. Cover and cook, stirring occasionally, until thickened, about 30 minutes.
Stir in the cheese and butter until evenly incorporated. Season with pepper to taste. Serve immediately.

*Cook's Note: For Baked Grits: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Cool the grits slightly, stir in the 3 beaten eggs. Transfer grits to a buttered deep casserole dish, smooth the top with a rubber spatula, and bake until just set and lightly browned, about 1 hour.
Remove from the oven and let cool for 5 minutes before serving.

Sorry for the delay in posting. I have continued to document, but have not had time to blog for some time. I am behind to say the least. The past month has been so busy, but it was mostly all good. Family, friends, birthdays, Thanksgiving and last week a trip to Washington DC. It was my first trip to the capital. Later I will post photos of the trip and some of the incredible art that I experienced!

On a sad note, we had one horrible day in November. Actually it was the day before my fiftieth birthday, a day I will never forget. We had to put our 13 year-old, yellow lab, Allie down. (Our smiling dog!) She had rallied on Lasix in July, but time and age took its toll, and in just a 48 hour time frame, she went from smiling to no longer being able to walk. Congestive heart failure was the suspect. We will miss her. She was a joy!

But to the point, my bucket list continued:
15. Became a friend of a friend.
16. Donated 2 pieces of art to a cancer benefit.
17. This is a funny deed. I was shopping and needed some organic yogurt. Another shopper and I both went for the very last container. Guess who got it? I insisted she take it :)
18. Offered my textbooks to a person interested in learning about art.
19. Offered my shoulder to a friend going through a difficult time.
20. Called an old friend.
21-23. Made handmade cards for some friends.
24-25. Invited 3 others who did not have family in town to Thanksgiving dinner.
26. Introduced a myself to someone. We had a mutual friend.
27-28. Shared homemade cranberry mango chutney with some friends.

Here is my continued "remember to do good bucket list because it is the right thing to do and I am having a substantial birthday!" Still searching for a good name. Had a great suggestion last time, but unfortunately, ma'am, I am no "angel."

Here is my list for the last few days:
8. Gave some fresh rosemary to a friend.
9. Sent a belated birthday wish to a 100-year-old. Dear dear lady by the way :)
10. Sharing a textbook with someone who is a budding artist.
11. Kept baby for a mommy needing a haircut and some time away.
12. Stopped to help a stranded female motorist.
13. Made homemade chicken soup for a sick friend.
14. Made chocolate spiders for a Halloween party. Ooh scary! Boo!!!

3. Rocked a baby to sleep for a mother in a public place :) and then held her until my arm went to sleep.

4. Picked up more trash on the roadside.

5. Sat a turtle off the road so he/she would not get hit.

6. Baked a new recipe, Olive Oil Bread, and shared with a neighbor who has been sick.
7. Shared a recipe with a friend.

Best Ideas When Walking . . . Or Sometimes When in the Shower.

I am going to share a bit today about myself: been a bit stressed this week, not sure why, but felt I did not accomplish enough each day, (you know that Puritan work ethic that bites us sometimes.) So I went for a walk in the neighborhood and soaked up Fall colors, met a few neighbors, and came home to shower. More sharing. While in the shower, I began to think about my upcoming birthday, (big one!) and that milestone.

First a bit of background, this summer while visiting with cousins similar to my age, we discussed the Bucket List that is popular today for monumental birthdays or for a upcoming unfortunate demise as in the movie, Bucket List. My cousins were making lists of places that they wanted to visit, skills they wanted to learn, and adventures they wanted to take. All good things, right? But I wanted to do something different. You know me.

So back to my shower . . . as I am rinsing the conditioner from my hair, I realized I had 30 days before I hit that big one. Once again, more sharing . . . I thought, "I need a bucket list! I need to do something everyday for a month. I am running out of time . . . Om my gosh . . . But as I continued to think about this list, a light bulb went off. Rather than doing things only for my pleasure, I should do things for others and give back because that always makes me feel better anyway." Yes, my bucket list is to be random acts of kindness.

So here I go . . . I have given myself this challenge. For the next 30 days, I will post the random acts along with a few things that I do for myself, after all it is my birthday.

If you want, you can do this too. If you do, please post on the comments section of this page or Facebook. Let's have some fun. Let do some good. We will call this our "Bucket List of Being Good & Kind" until I think of a something better :)

Went to Big D this last week and walked to the Dallas Museum of Art. Had a great visit and saw some incredible pieces and collections. . .

My artwork has just been selected for the Missouri Arts Council's Arts Award Poster for 2011! I am so excited . . .

Each year, the Missouri Arts Council selects the work of a Missouri artist as the image for the Arts Awards poster and invitation.
MAC makes their selection from the artworks accepted into the Missouri 50 Exhibition. This exhibition is held each year during the Missouri State Fair in Sedalia. The Art Awards Ceremony will be held in Feb. 2011, in Jefferson City.
